Meet the Rangers

ᐅᓇᑕᖅᑐᒃᓴᑦ ᑭᓇᐅᓂᖏᑦ

Adam started as a Ranger in Taloyoak in 1998 at the age of 18 and continued as a Ranger after he moved to Gjoa Haven in 2001. Adam is also a Search and Rescue volunteer. Adam has been on the annual 1 CRPG exercise Operation Nunalivut.

Benjamin, in his mid 20s, is one of the four newest Recruits in Taloyoak. Raised by his grandparents, they would often take him out of school for weeks at a time to live out on the land. Benjamin is a highly skilled hunter for his age.

Today’s Canadian Rangers had their beginnings in World War II. When a lighthouse on British Columbia’s coast was attacked by a Japanese submarine, it drew attention to the vulnerability of the sparsely populated coast.

THE CANADIAN RANGERS TODAY

ᐅᑉᓗᒥᐅᔪᖅ ᑲᓇᑕᒥ ᐅᓇᑕᖅᑐᒃᓴᑦ

Following the end of World War II, the Pacific Coast Militia Rangers role expanded to include other remote and coastal parts of Canada. They were relaunched in 1947 as the Canadian Rangers. In the 1970s, increased interest in protecting Canada’s North renewed interest in the Ranger program.
