Meet the Rangers

Corporal Paul Ikuallaq is the 3rd in command in Gjoa Haven. He’s an experienced Ranger and has been on two sovereignty patrols – first in 2004 to Alert that covered 1,750km, and then a three-week-long 8,000km trek in 2007 to Alert.

Abel has been a Ranger in Taloyoak since 1984 when the Patrol first started and has held the rank of sergeant for over a decade. Abel is indeed a force in his community.

HISTORY OF THE CANADIAN RANGERS

Today’s Canadian Rangers had their beginnings in World War II. When a lighthouse on British Columbia’s coast was attacked by a Japanese submarine, it drew attention to the vulnerability of the sparsely populated coast.

THE CANADIAN RANGERS TODAY

ᐅᑉᓗᒥᐅᔪᖅ ᑲᓇᑕᒥ ᐅᓇᑕᖅᑐᒃᓴᑦ

Following the end of World War II, the Pacific Coast Militia Rangers role expanded to include other remote and coastal parts of Canada. They were relaunched in 1947 as the Canadian Rangers. In the 1970s, increased interest in protecting Canada’s North renewed interest in the Ranger program.
