Meet the Rangers

ᐅᓇᑕᖅᑐᒃᓴᑦ ᑭᓇᐅᓂᖏᑦ

One of three children born of a mother from Taloyoak and a father from Yellowknife, Byron travelled and worked throughout Canada before moving to Taloyoak in 2007, and is one of Taloyoak’s newest recruits.

Abel has been a Ranger in Taloyoak since 1984 when the Patrol first started and has held the rank of sergeant for over a decade. Abel is indeed a force in his community.

HISTORY OF THE CANADIAN RANGERS

ᐱᒋᐊᕐᓂᕆᓯᒪᔭᖏᑦ ᑲᓇᑕᒥ ᐅᓇᑕᖅᑐᒃᓴᐃᑦ,

Today’s Canadian Rangers had their beginnings in World War II. When a lighthouse on British Columbia’s coast was attacked by a Japanese submarine, it drew attention to the vulnerability of the sparsely populated coast.

THE CANADIAN RANGERS TODAY

ᐅᑉᓗᒥᐅᔪᖅ ᑲᓇᑕᒥ ᐅᓇᑕᖅᑐᒃᓴᑦ

Following the end of World War II, the Pacific Coast Militia Rangers role expanded to include other remote and coastal parts of Canada. They were relaunched in 1947 as the Canadian Rangers. In the 1970s, increased interest in protecting Canada’s North renewed interest in the Ranger program.
